MIMIC Magazine is an experimental science arts (and at times counterculture) magazine that amplifies underrepresented stories and voices, sharing cool research and personal experiences along the way. The first edition of MIMIC dives straight into the very essence of our experience of the world, a subject that has long seized the curiosity of scientists and artists alike: our senses. We’ll investigate differences in perceived realities. Our contributors discuss the illusions of space photography and taste, chronic pain and emerging psychedelic therapies, strange animal senses, neurodivergence in motherhood, and more. Each copy comes with interactive components like a scratch and sniff sticker, collectible card, and crossword puzzle, inspired by my favorite nostalgic features of old magazines with a modern twist.
Much like the mimic octopus—a master of shapeshifting and seamless transition between identities—I created MIMIC magazine because I wanted to blend the identities dividing science and art, bridging the gap between two subjects that sometimes seem worlds apart. In fact, many science communicators, or individuals who typically have a background in both the sciences and the arts, work diligently to blur the lines between the two, attempting to make unclear where one line begins and the other ends.
During my Neuroscience degree at Ohio State University and Science Communication degree at Imperial College London, I found a massive chasm between science and art—and there shouldn’t be one. Science and art are both avenues to finding the truth, both ways of better understanding our-selves and the world around us. Both start with curiosity and end with discovery, and some-times vice versa. Both are forms of storytelling and creation in their own right, or rather a shedding of a reality that already exists in another form, whether that be in a jungle deep in the Amazon or inside your own brain. While science can feel as if it’s full of certainties, both science and art are, ultimately, interpretations of reality.
This magazine is for burnt-out creatives still wanting to learn but growing bored with the traditional, and those seeking the fun and play that’s missing from classic science magazines. If you’re looking for something new, fun, colorful, and different, this magazine is definitely for you. Limited copies available.
